Overview

Degree Overview
>Study Economics, Mathematics and a choice of languages or Computer Science.
>Languages available: Mandarin Chinese, French, German and Spanish are available to complete beginners. Leaving Certificate H4 recommended to study non-beginner level Mandarin Chinese, French, German, Spanish.
>Work and/or study abroad in 3rd year (or work in an internationally orientated company in Ireland; all subject to availability).
>Develop an understanding of the economic principles underlying markets of all kinds; financial markets, labour markets and goods markets.
>Learn how the international economic system works; how assets are traded, international markets are linked, government policy decisions affect the economy and how financial markets respond.
>Become prepared, both intellectually and practically, for employment in the highly competitive and dynamic world of international economics.
>Learn how to use analytical tools, including mathematics, deductive logic and applied statistics, to examine problems and devise logical solutions.


Course structure

Duration: 4 years with placement or Erasmus/Study Abroad

Duration: 4 years (placement or Erasmus/Study Abroad in year 3)

1st year

>30 credits of International Economics, which includes 15 credits of Economics and 15 credits of Mathematics/Statistics modules
>15 or 30 credits of a language (Chinese Studies*, French*, German*, Spanish*) or Computer Science
>Credits permitting, students may take 1 other subject, which may include Critical Skills, from Subject Groups 1, 2 or 5. Subject Groups.
*Beginners language programme available. This requires 30 credits in the language (Mandarin Chinese, French, German or Spanish).
Students are strongly recommended to take 7.5 credits of Accounting, however, because of timetable restrictions, it will only be available to those taking Computer Science, Spanish or German (not as beginner). Students will have a second opportunity to take an Introduction to Accounting course in 2nd year.
Students who wish to keep open the option of a minor in Maths in Year 2 should select specific modules.

2nd year
Choose between 2 possible routes:

  • Single Major in International Economics
  • Major/Minor with Economics as the Major and either Computer Science or their 1st year language or Mathematical Studies as a Minor. Approximately 33% of a student’s time is spent on the Minor

Optional 10 credit Elective in 2nd year

3rd year
Work or Study Abroad or placement in an internationally orientated firm in Ireland (subject to availability). If a suitable placement cannot be found, the student may continue directly into the final year, obtaining a single major or major/minor BA Bachelor of Arts in Economics.
The University will support you in the search for a placement job; however, the process is competitive.

Final year
Back on the Maynooth University campus taking the Single Major or Major/Minor (depending on the 2nd year option chosen).

>Postgraduate degree holders are also to be found working in financial institutions, both public and private, in Dublin, London, New York and around the globe. Many of our students continue to further postgraduate study in a range of Economics and Finance-related programmes.
