Overview

Master of Science in Mathematical Science

Students take modules in Theoretical Physics and Mathematics, including a 20 ECTS research project in Theoretical Physics. At least 45 ECTS, including the research project, must be taken at the Masters level (level 6 in Theoretical Physics and level 5 in Mathematics). The remaining credits may be made up at levels 4, 5 or 6.

All module choices are subject to the approval of the Head of Department. Available modules are listed below. The research project (20 ECTS Minor thesis) is compulsory. At least 45 ECTS must be taken at level 5, 6 or 8. Total credits 60.

Careers after Grad Degree

The course provides a solid foundation in Theoretical Physics, Applied Mathematics and Pure Mathematics for students who wish to pursue careers in science, engineering, commerce and technology. Graduates gain employment in a wide range of occupations including research, teaching, actuary, banking, software development, computational physics and computer modelling/simulation. Students who perform well may go on to the PhD programme.

Entry Requirements

Candidates for MSc in Mathematical Science will normally be expected to have at least a Second Class Honours Grade 1 in Theoretical/Mathematical Physics, Mathematics or a related discipline.

Applicants must have a recognised primary degree which is considered equivalent to Irish university primary degree level.
